The breeding of emus in Hungary has been obstructed for many years, as the emu was officially categorised as a “dangerous animal”. This meant that the emu was on the same page with the tiger, the lion or a poisonous snake.
You can imagine how “dangerous” a bird of 40 kg could be. One which gets a heart attack from lightning and madly runs away when sees a stranger. Well, when somebody catches up him, than he can kick a huge with his powerful legs and this can really hurt – but we should recognise that this bird is just trying to defend himself. Perhaps a shocked horse is a bit more dangerous…
Anyway, we welcomed the long-awaited change in the regulation in February 2013, which “declassified” the emu so it is no longer a dangerous animal in Hungary.
